Selling on Poshmark: My Personal Experience

Have you ever wondered if people really make money selling items online? Today, I’m sharing all the details about how to make money on Poshmark!

Here’s the story about how I began selling items on Poshmark. About a year ago, I came to the realization that I had too much stuff in my closets.  It was becoming increasingly more difficult to shove things in my walk-in closet after doing laundry or bringing in a haul after a shopping trip.

I “share” a closet with my husband. The word share is in quotation marks because I’m sure if we asked him, he’d argue that dominate is a more realistic word to describe what I do regarding our closet.

I have several new and gently-used items in my closet that I haven’t worn in a while, and I can’t say with confidence that I would wear them again. Some items are simply not my style anymore, some were impulse purchases, and some I just can’t wear anymore because I’ve either lost (or gained) weight. (That’s a blog post for another day.)

After seeing several Poshmark advertisements on television and social media, I decided to see what Poshmark was all about.

What is Poshmark?

Poshmark is an app for buying and selling new and pre-owned clothes, shoes, accessories, personal care products, and home goods.   There are specific guidelines for what can and can’t be sold on the Poshmark platform, so I highly recommend checking their website if you have questions.

Poshmark is headquartered in Redwood City, California, and was founded in 2011.  While Poshmark is heavily mobile-based, phone numbers are listed on the website should you need to speak with someone live.

How to get started selling on Poshmark.

When I decided to try my hand at selling on Poshmark, the first thing I did was download the Poshmark app from the App Store. The app is absolutely free and very easy to set up. I was prompted to enter general information like my name, contact information, clothing size, and favorite brands to set up my account. From there, I was pretty much all set to begin buying and selling on the app.

After my account was set up, I went to my closet to pick out items that I was ready to part ways with. Using my cell phone, I took pictures of the items and saved them to my camera roll. Here’s a tip: Take several pictures of the item from several different angles. Make sure that you have adequate lighting. I almost always use my ring light if natural light is not available.

Taking and uploading the pictures is the easy part. It can be time-consuming at first, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it. If you’re not a good photographer, there are several built-in filters that you can use to enhance your photographs.  Or, you can simply use a white wall as a background for your photos. Additionally, there are so many apps available that will allow you to blur or change the background so that your item is the focus of the photo.

After you upload the photos, you will be prompted to enter other information about the item(s). This is where it can get cumbersome. (But again, once you get the hang of it, it’s super easy.) You will need to be as descriptive and as forthcoming as possible when describing the item(s). If the item has signs of wear, stains, snags, or pulls, make sure to disclose those details in the description.

How much money should you list items for on Poshmark?

It’s hard to determine a good price to list something on Poshmark. When trying to determine the listing price for an item, I look at similar items. If the price isn’t in line with my ideal price, I adjust my pricing as I see fit. Oh, and please don’t forget to consider the Poshmark seller fee: Poshmark takes $2.95 for sales under $15 and 20% off all higher-priced sales. If I’m ever in doubt, I always aim for a higher price, especially since many buyers like to negotiate.

Does Poshmark work?

I created my account on November 18, 2018. I spent several months lurking the site before I worked up enough nerve to actually list an item. During this time, I scrolled the site looking at other sellers’ profiles and listings. I learned so much during that time. Once I saw what people were selling on Poshmark, I was pretty confident that I would be successful selling items on the site. It wasn’t until August 10, 2019 that I listed my first item. Just four days later, I made my first sale!

The first thing I sold on Poshmark was a pair of Pierre Dumas Sandals. I sold my second and third items a few days after that. From that point on, I was consistently selling items. I may have a few weeks of no sales, but there hasn’t been a month that has gone by that I haven’t sold at least one item.

To date, I have sold over 45 items on Poshmark and have earned over $600. That’s not too shabby for items that would have just been hanging out (literally) in my closet. I have a 4.9 (out of 5) star rating and I have earned the distinctions of being a top seller, a fast shipper, and a Posh Mentor!

Here are some of my tried and true tactics for making sales and getting positive feedback on Poshmark:

  • Take several pictures of the item(s) that you are trying to sell.
  • To begin, only choose a few items to upload at a time. Otherwise, you will get overwhelmed.
  • Be very detailed in the description of the item(s).
  • Be honest about any flaws that the item may have (both through pictures and descriptions).
  • Have a method for shipping items quickly (You can print the shipping labels from home and then place the items in your mailbox for pickup!)
  • Ship items neatly. I also like to add a handwritten thank-you note. (It’s not necessary, but it’s a nice touch.)
  • Add new items to your closet (your Poshmark page) regularly.
  • Respond to questions and comments promptly.
