Grateful to stand in Thurgood Marshall Regional Pa Grateful to stand in Thurgood Marshall Regional Park - Home of the Port Chicago 50. Beautiful morning for a reflective walk!
After spending just 24 hours in California learnin After spending just 24 hours in California learning about the Port Chicago Disaster, my mind is full and my heart is heavy. I had never heard of this tragedy until recently, but here are 10 things I’ve learned so far:
 1. It happened on July 17, 1944 at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine near Concord, CA.

 2. It was the deadliest homefront disaster of WWII, killing 320 sailors and civilians instantly.

 3. Most of the sailors who died were young Black men who were assigned to load ammunition under unsafe and racially discriminatory conditions.

 4. The explosion was so massive that it was felt as far away as Nevada.

 5. 50 Black sailors refused to return to those unsafe working conditions and were later convicted of mutiny—the largest such trial in U.S. Navy history.

 6. The Port Chicago 50 sparked national conversations about racism in the military and helped fuel the desegregation of the armed forces.

 7. Thurgood Marshall, before becoming a Supreme Court Justice, observed the trial and condemned the convictions as unjust.

 8. There is a National Memorial Site here, but it’s on an active military base, so access is limited.

 9. Many of the Port Chicago 50 never had their names cleared, despite ongoing efforts to restore their honor.

 10. This history isn’t taught nearly enough, and visiting here makes me realize how much we still need to uncover and share.

I’ll be sharing more details soon, but I encourage you to read up on the Port Chicago Disaster. It’s a painful but important part of American history that deserves more attention.

How many of my friends have heard of the Port Chic How many of my friends have heard of the Port Chicago Disaster? I’ll admit—I hadn’t until Visit Concord, CA invited me here for Port Chicago Weekend. It’s a significant piece of history that I’m just now learning about, and y’all… it’s heavy, but so important.

I’ll be diving deeper into the story while I’m here, and I promise to come back with all the details. Stay tuned—you’ll want to know this one.
