3 Days at Alabama’s Beaches: The Ultimate Gulf Shores Itinerary
As a self-professed Alabama’s Beaches aficionado, I’m sharing my Gulf Shores itinerary. I’m in my late 40s and I can’t remember a year that my getaways haven’t included a trip to my home state’s beautiful white-sand beaches.
If you’ve never been, let me just say — you are in for a treat. This corner of the Alabama Gulf Coast has a way of getting into your bones and claiming a space in your heart. And once you’ve dipped your toes in that beautiful turquoise water, you’ll understand why so many of us keep coming back year after year.
This 3-day Gulf Shores itinerary is built for first-timers who want to experience as much of the area as possible without feeling rushed. Think of it as an extended beach weekend: a long weekend that packs in beach time, water activities, local restaurants, and a little bit of everything Alabama’s beaches do best.
Whether you’re planning family vacations, a spring break beach trip, or just a getaway with your favorite people, this is your roadmap.

Getting There: Closest Airports and Easy Access
One of the best things about a Gulf Shores itinerary is how easy it is to reach. Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF) is now one of the closest airports, sitting just three miles from the beach. Allegiant Airlines offers a nonstop flight to and from several major US cities. They are all three hours or less.
Land at GUF and you’ll be toes-in-the-sand before you know it. That’s a lot of time saved for actual beach time instead of driving.
If GUF doesn’t have a flight that works for your travel dates, Pensacola International Airport is another solid option. It’s just a short drive from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and plenty of travelers still fly into Pensacola before making the easy drive down Gulf Shores Parkway right into paradise.
When you cross into town, make a quick stop at the Welcome Center. The folks there are a wealth of local knowledge, and it’s a great way to grab maps, coupons, and tips before you dive into your beach vacation.
If you prefer to drive, here are the drive time estimates from several major cities:
| City | Approximate Drive Time |
| New Orleans, LA | 3 hours |
| Birmingham, AL | 4.5 hours |
| Jackson, MS | 4.5–5.5 hours |
| Atlanta, GA | 5.5 hours |
| Huntsville, AL | 6 hours |
| Memphis, TN | 7 hours |
| Nashville, TN | 7 hours |
Best Time to Visit
If you ask me, the tail end of spring is the absolute sweet spot for a visit. You’ll be greeted by endless blue skies and water that’s plenty warm for a dip, all while dodging the heavy foot traffic that comes with the height of summer.
That said, there is something truly infectious about the classic beach town energy that only a summer trip can provide.
Don’t sleep on an autumn getaway to Alabama’s beaches, either. I’ve had some of my most memorable stays in September and October; the air turns a bit crisper, the pace slows down, and you feel like you have the sand all to yourself.
I suppose it’s easy to see that my official stance is this: there is never a bad time for a Gulf Shores escape. I’ve experienced these shores in every season, and even on the chilliest days, there is nothing quite like cozying up on a balcony to soak in those stunning turquoise views.

Where to Stay
For a group or family that wants plenty of space and a full living room to spread out in, a beachfront condo is the way to go.
Pro Tip: Spectrum Resorts is my favorite. They manage two incredible properties on the Alabama Gulf Coast, and each one has its own personality.
The Beach Club Resort & Spa sits on 86 acres in the quieter Fort Morgan area of Gulf Shores, with a village-style layout that puts everything — onsite restaurants, a spa, tennis courts, pools, and a full lineup of kids’ activities — right at your fingertips.
Another option is Turquoise Place in nearby Orange Beach. It’s one of the most talked-about towers on the coast. The condos here run three to five bedrooms, so there’s genuinely plenty of space for a multi-generational trip.
And the amenities are among the best in the area. Think a 300-foot swirling waterslide, a lazy river, multiple pools, tennis and pickleball courts, and private balconies with hot tubs and outdoor kitchens.
It’s resort-style living that makes the condo itself feel like its own destination.
Beyond these resorts, you’ll find everything from cozy campgrounds, glamping sites and standard hotels to private beach houses, ensuring there is a perfect spot for every traveler’s style and budget.
There are even lakefront cabins nearby if you’re interested in staying at Gulf State Park.
Here are some additional options that are steps away from the beach:

Here are a few things to note before you head to the Alabama Gulf Coast:
The lay of the land
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are two connected but distinct beach towns along the Alabama Gulf Coast, with Fort Morgan and Perdido Key stretching out further on the peninsula. You’ll want a car — nothing here is walkable between towns, though The Wharf and many parts of Gulf Shores are pedestrian-friendly once you’ve parked.
Beach flag warnings
Alabama’s beaches use a color-coded flag system for water safety: green (calm), yellow (moderate surf), red (high hazard, no swimming advised), purple (dangerous marine life), and double red (water closed). Flags are posted at every public beach access — always check before you swim.
Parking and budget basics
Gulf Shores Public Beach charges for parking (paid by app), so budget for that. Roughly plan on $15–20 per person for the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, $8–10 per person for the Ferris wheel, $12+ per person for go-karts at The Track, and $40–60 per person for a sunset dolphin cruise. Fort Morgan has a small entrance fee as well.
Packing list
Reef-safe sunscreen, a beach umbrella or chairs (or plan to rent them), water shoes for rocky or jetty areas, bug spray for the nature trails, and a cooler if your condo doesn’t come stocked.
Grocery run
Stop at a grocery store on your way into town before you settle into your condo — it saves a first-night scramble and beats paying beach-town prices for the basics.
Pro Tip: Skip the grocery store run and let The Beach Moms take care of it for you!
Book ahead
The sunset dolphin cruise and popular gulf-front dinner spots fill up fast in peak season — reserve those before you arrive, especially if you’re traveling over a holiday weekend or spring break.
Now, let’s jump into the itinerary:

Day 1: Beach Time, Boogie Boards, and Live Music
Your first day should be all about getting sand between your toes. I mean, that’s what you came to the beach for, right? Head straight to one of the public beaches or take advantage of your rental’s private beach area and stake your claim.
Grab some boogie boards, wade into the Gulf, and just soak it in. Or, if you’re like me, settle into a relaxing beach chair under an umbrella. Grab your favorite book and curl up for a few hours. There’s a reason people plan entire beach vacations around this stretch of coastline and it won’t take you long to figure out why.
For lunch, keep it casual with a stop at one of the delicious local restaurants. I typically opt for one with a laid-back vibe and fresh seafood. Of course, if you aren’t ready to leave your beach chair just yet, packing some snacks allows you to keep your focus on those turquoise waves for as long as you want.
As the sun starts to dip, make your way to Flora-Bama Lounge near Perdido Key for live music and a genuine slice of Gulf Coast culture. This iconic spot straddling the Alabama-Florida line has been a local favorite for decades, and there’s live music happening most evenings.
Day 2: Family Fun, Wildlife, and Fresh Seafood
Make day two your family-friendly activities day. And there’s plenty of time to do it all if you start early. (I’m team no sleep when I’m on vacay!)
Kick things off with breakfast at a one of the many spots serving up favorite like French toast and other classic beach-town brunch fare. Then, head to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, if you have animal lovers in your family. This is one of the top family-friendly attractions in the area, with hands-on animal encounters and educational programs that make it a great time for kids and adults, too.
After that, make your way over to The Wharf to browse the local shops and hop on the Ferris wheel—it is an absolute must for photos and provides one of the best bird’s-eye views in town. You can spend the afternoon browsing the cute shops, catching a film at the theater, or putting your teamwork to the test in one of the escape rooms for a bit of a family challenge.
For dinner, treat yourself to a gulf-front restaurant where you can order the catch of the day while watching the sun sink into the water. Fresh seafood tastes even better with a view, right?.
It’s also a great way to cap off day two before an evening stroll or one more dip in the pool.
Day 3: Nature, History, and a Sunset Send-Off
Your final day is the perfect place to slow down and take in the diverse ecosystems that make this stretch of coastline so special.
Start at Gulf State Park, where nature trails and biking trails wind through maritime forest, dunes, and freshwater lakes. Lake Shelby is a peaceful spot for early risers to catch the morning light, and the park’s nature center offers a great introduction to the plants and animals that call this area home.
If you’ve got time, rent a bike and take a leisurely bike ride along the paved trails — it’s one of the best ways to see a side of Gulf Shores most visitors miss.
Next, head to Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge for a quieter, wilder look at Alabama’s beaches. This protected stretch of dunes, marsh, and maritime forest is home to incredible biodiversity, and the butterfly garden near the refuge is a lovely, easy stop for the whole family.
From there, make the short drive out to Historic Fort Morgan, a National Historic Landmark perched at the tip of the peninsula. It’s one of the area’s best cultural attractions, and walking the grounds gives you a real sense of the region’s history.
Just beyond it, Fort Morgan Beach is quieter and less crowded — a perfect spot for one last stretch of beach time before you head home.
To close out your long weekend the right way, book a sunset dolphin cruise. Watching dolphins play in the wake as the sky turns gold is one of those priceless Gulf Coast moments that last long after you’ve packed up the car. It’s simply a great way to end an unforgettable trip.
Extra Tips for Your Gulf Shores Itinerary
- Grab dinner reservations early at popular spots, especially during peak season — fine dining restaurants along the coast fill up fast.
- Pack for both fun and fine dining. You’ll want casual restaurant clothes for beach days and something a little nicer for a gulf-front dinner.
This Gulf Shores itinerary only scratches the surface of what Alabama’s beaches have to offer, but it’s a solid foundation for anyone experiencing this beach town for the first time.
Whatever brings you here — a quick weekend escape or a full-blown beach vacation — I promise you’ll be planning your next trip back before you’ve even left the sand.
