Four Places I Want to Visit in Alabama

Share this article:

I’ve lived in Alabama for each of the forty-something years of my life. Even though I live in the central part of the state and have traveled to cities and towns in the northern, southern, eastern, and western parts of the Yellowhammer State, I’ve somehow missed visiting these places:

  1.  Lookout Mountain

I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’ve driven right past Lookout Mountain in Alabama to enjoy the view from the Tennessee part of this attraction which is conveniently located on the borders of three states: Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.  I’ve fallen victim to looking outside when I’ve got something good right here at home! I’m not a huge outdoor person, but I will admit that there is something to be said about taking a moment to stop and look at the wonderful creations that surround us.  I’m never disappointed when I take the time to visit parks and bask in the beauty of nature.

  1. Point Mallard Park

This north Alabama park seems like a great place for families.  Point Mallard Park is made up of a water park, golf course, ice complex, campground, and strike zone.  I’m getting excited just typing about it! Due to the pandemic, Point Mallard announced that they would not open for the 2020 season.  Hopefully, COVID will leave and I’ll be able to visit Point Mallard soon.

  1.  Chewacla State Park

I’m an alumna of Auburn University, which is the home of the beautiful (or so I’ve heard) Chewacla State Park.  I guess I was too busy studying during my four year-stint at AU to visit Chewacla. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!)  However, every time I see pictures of people there, I get jealous.  Really jealous.  I love state parks and appreciate the beauty that they offer. Maybe now that my son is a student at Auburn, I’ll get a chance to visit Chewacla State Park soon.

4.  Gee’s Bend

The story behind Gee’s Bend Quilters has fascinated me for quite some time.  I remember seeing this story on a segment of The Oprah Winfrey Show and I was hooked immediately.  My ears perked up even more when I heard that the famous Gee’s Bend quilts were made right in my home state.  Gee’s Bend is on six different “places you must visit” in Alabama lists that I saw.  I guess that’s my cue!

Well, there you have it!  I’ve given you a list of four places in Alabama that I plan on visiting in the near future or whenever COVID-19 says so, I guess.  Have any of you ever visited these places?  Let me know in the comments!
