Yesterday we visited the Harvey B. Gantt Center fo Yesterday we visited the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in uptown Charlotte.

Before you even walk in, the building grabs your attention. Architect Phil Freelon designed its stacked, striking façade as a tribute to the Myers Street School, a landmark of Charlotte's Brooklyn neighborhood, a thriving Black community that was erased by "urban renewal."

My favorite gallery was Yashua Klos: Cornerstones. Klos layers woodblock prints into huge collaged portraits where faces meet wood, concrete, and fractured grids, so the pieces look almost three-dimensional. Those building materials point back to his hometown of Chicago and its long history of segregation and housing discrimination.

So who was Harvey Gantt? 🏛️
🖤In 1963, he became the first Black student admitted to Clemson University, integrating the school peacefully after a legal fight. He graduated with honors in architecture.

🖤He went on to become a successful architect and city planner.

🖤 In 1983, he was elected Charlotte's first Black mayor and served two terms.

🖤He ran twice for the U.S. Senate against Jesse Helms in 1990 and 1996, races that drew national attention.

If you're headed to Charlotte, put the Gantt Center on your list. Cornerstones is on view through January 22, 2027.

Have you been? Tell me your favorite exhibit below! 👇🏾
